Dr. Ram Mamohar Lohia Avadh University was established in the year 1975 on the 25th of July and the university was initially called as Avadh University. The university was given its present name in memory of late Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, who was a freedom fighter. The university was established as affiliating university and in the year 1984, it was given the status of affiliating-cum-residential university. The university started to function with four departments namely solid state physics, statistics & mathematics, rural economics, archaeology & culture and history. Right from its inception, the university has been growing slowly and steadily with the introduction of several new courses. The university has been conducting researches, PG and UG courses in the disciplines of environmental sciences, microbiology, bio-chemistry, statistics & mathematics and economics in addition to subjects of rural development and extension education and journalism & mass communication.
