The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai was established in 1987. This is the only Medical University in Tamil Nadu capable of granting affiliation to new institutions under Government or Self-financing in Medical, Dental, Indian Medicine/Homoeopathy & Allied Health Sciences (Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy etc.) and awarding degrees under a single umbrella to maintain uniform and high standards of education.  The university also promotes research and disseminates knowledge gained there from. The university has been declared eligible by the UGC Act 1956 for receiving central assistance. The mission of the institute is to create personnel for health manpower who will be endowed with a sense of dedication and a spirit of enquiry and will contribute substantially to the Alma Ata goals of health for all by 2020 A.D.

Over the years, we have seen that these courses are a hot trend in many of our affiliated medical colleges. They are the fastest-growing career options that campuses have seen. Many students get placed before they complete their course. Some courses like the dialysis technician course fetch them a starting salary that is nearly double that of a nurse. Beyond job possibilities, students are enthusiastic about these courses because of the proximity with doctors and high-end equipment to use to help people who are sick.

Around 70% of those students in these colleges were from rural areas. But the course has remained out of bounds for many because self-financing colleges and deemed universities charge up to Rs 60,000 per year for the course. The medical university, which has so far largely focused on syllabus revisions, affiliation and other administrative work, will now offer degree courses on the campus.
