The Tamil Nadu Open University came into existence through an Act of the Legislative Assembly of the Tamil Nadu Government in 1971 for the benefit to higher education particularly those who have discontinued education for various reasons, economically weaker sections of the society, working men and women, physically challenged and destitute people. The main aim of the university is to reach the unreached and it offers different disciplines of education.
Tamil Nadu Open University offers courses under various categories like professional courses, PG courses, UG Courses, diploma courses, certificate courses, vocational diploma courses, B. Ed courses and catering and hotel administration courses. For getting into the courses offered by the university certain minimum qualification requirements are to be filled by the candidates. The courses offered by the TNOU are designed keeping Indira Gandhi National Open University as model. The flexible examination system followed by the university is the main reason for the popularity of the university.
In addition to these courses, the university also offers M. Phil courses in many subjects. The university has study centres not only in the state of Tamil Nadu, but it also has study centres in different states in India. The university has tie-ups with International Council for Open and Distance Education, Commonwealth of Learning and it is approved by the University Grants Commission. Thus, Tamil Nadu Open University acts as the best university for open learning in the state of Tamil Nadu.
