University of Gour Banga is approved by the UGC under Sec 2(f) of the University Grants Commission Act 1956. It was established under the West Bengal Act XXVI of 2007 and the date of appointment of the university according to the West Bengal Government Gazette is 10th of March 2008. The university is located at Malda, which is an ancient town of undivided state of Bengal and the town was previously called as ‘Gour’. Initially, for setting up the university a plot of land measuring about 26 acres was transferred by West Bengal Government within the English Bazaar Municipality area. The main aim of the university is to pursue excellence in professional and educational competence.

The university is looking at the future with confidence to reach the status of one of leading universities for professional practice, research and learning. The main principle of the university is to attain synergy, excellence, equity and access between learning and teaching on one hand and scholarliness and research on the other. The university aims are offering state-of-the-art infrastructure, international level faculty, intellectually and vibrantly stimulating environment with an integrated academic community. The university is also looking forward to introduce new courses every year to meet the needs of the students keeping in mind employment requirements of the future citizens of the country. At present, the university has seven departments namely mathematics, education, history, Arabic, Sanskrit, Bengali and English and it is aiming at introducing more courses every year as mentioned earlier.
